Cybersecurity with Heart: The Arns Carrenard Story
Hi, I'm Arns Carrenard, and this is my story.
Growing up in Carrefour, Haiti, life wasn't always easy for my family. My parents faced frequent scams and financial exploitation. Because of that, my parents were determined to teach me the importance of education and instilled in me the value of helping others, which left a lasting impression.
In addition to my parents’ advice, my father always supported me and pushed me to play soccer, which helped me through the hard times.
Soccer has always been a huge part of my life. I have memories of my father coming to every games. And about a decade ago, an opportunity presented itself—a soccer scholarship that would lead me to the United States to pursue an education.
Becoming the first in my family to attend school with a scholarship in the United States was a proud moment, not just for me, but for my entire family.
While pursuing my bachelor's degree in computer science, I enrolled in an "Intro to Cybersecurity" course. This was a turning point in my academic path. This class opened my eyes to the vast and captivating world of cybersecurity.
Cyber security offered me an opportunity to make a positive impact. It allowed me to advocate for those who had been scammed, just like my parents. Despite not being tech-savvy and lacking a tech-rich upbringing, my determination pushed me to pursue a degree in cybersecurity.
I had a new dream and was prepared to do whatever it took to achieve it. Even though I could only afford to take one class at a time, each one reaffirmed that cyber security was not only a way to help people but the way I wanted to help them. It was my chance to make a real impact. And that's when I found Arete.
Arete was more than just a company; it was a place where I discovered a deep connection with like-minded individuals who shared my values, integrity, compassion, kindness, and a shared drive to help others.
After sharing my aspirations with my colleagues, they offered me moral support to help me achieve my master's degree. And after a year and a half at the company, I graduated—a dream come true.
With one dream accomplished, I realized it was possible to fulfill my other dream—making a lasting impact in my home country, Haiti.
My wife and I did what we could with our resources, paying the tuition fees for 10 students. Arete welcomed my passion for serving with open arms, and an incredible opportunity emerged. I shared my vision for supporting the kids back home, and the company wanted to help! I was so excited to share the news with my wife and family. I was overwhelmed with gratitude.
With the company's support, we extended our reach to five times as many students, providing them with education. 50 students in Haiti now have a brighter future, thanks to Arete's heart for helping people.
This experience solidified what I knew about Arete. It's not just about coming to work and doing IT and cybersecurity. It's about our values, community involvement, and striving to make a difference in the world. That's why I'm proud to be a part of this company, and that's what keeps me here.
To anyone considering a career in this field, my advice is simple: Embrace your desire to help people.
The world needs your expertise to protect the vulnerable and combat cyber threats. As a cyber security professional, you become a hero who saves lives and provides understanding to those who need it the most.
Let compassion and the drive to help others guide your path.
That's what this job is all about, and that's what Arete stands for: helping people in need.
